THE COMMUNITY

The Community

Connecting community in the urban city.

Date Completed: August 2021

Location: Toronto, ON

Project Type: Mixed-use/Community

Applications Used: Revit, Adobe Photoshop

This personal project completed over the 2021 summer was aimed to design an environment that aids to promoting community in the urban city. In light of covid-19, I was inspired to create a project that worked towards shifting the streets to be more useable and connected. While also designing a space that contributes to creating a healthier city through the application of biophilia. “The Community” is a mixed-use space designed for social interaction and connection within the urban city. Zones include areas to work, play, and connect. Designed to be a café/lounge during the day, as well as an event space for community gatherings. To further engage the community and promote human connection through place.

The concept through the space is derived from the word connection, being symbolized through the use of the two half arches. Connection representing community and aiming to promote a sense of community through design, which is depicted through the half-arched elements. Whereas colour and finishes was inspired by the concept of connection in the urban city. By using natural materials and plants to connect the natural environment indoors, graffiti art was chosen to bring a sense of Toronto urban culture inside. WELL and LEED considerations for the space would be commissioning local artist to complete the art instillations, high access to natural daylight/views, and incorporating plants within design elements.
