The PeacePod

Designed for a student competition, The PeacePod prioritizes personal restoration and encourages wellness in the workplace environment. Inspired by the overarching concept of wellness, the intent was to create a furniture piece that emphasizes well-being and promoted the concept of mindfulness as part of the workplace environment. To achieve those notions, the product is designed to be a multipurpose furniture piece that allows users to relax and focus on their personal well-being. In order to address the essential value of wellness, the design offers privacy for users and incorporates biophilic design as part of the restoration experience. Specifically, both the front and back side of the furniture piece was designed with an integrated planter that allows for exposure to natural elements that embody a peaceful environment. In addition to instilling wellness, the piece places an importance on flexibility and provides multiple functions for the workplace.

To maximize the function the PeacePod consists of two sides that both offer personal restoration, a side for sitting and a side for standing or pulling up a chair to recharge from the workstation. These functions allow for users to decide how they would like to recharge. The Formica brand commercial laminate materials were an integral part of the design, as they allowed for the concept of wellness to be evoked through materiality. Notably, the Beige Elm woodgrain laminate, along with the various solid colour laminates contributes to the natural aesthetic of the product. Which is integral to capturing the essence of wellness. Moreover, Formica brand laminates aid the design solution for the furniture, as the product allows for the curved applications of the arches to be designed. Nonetheless, the PeacePod places an emphasize on personal restoration and is designed to meet the needs of a workplace environment, which is further exceeded in the application of Formica brand laminates.
